I was talking to a friend of Hindu faith, and as I understand it, most Hindus do not consider the cow to be a god and they do not worship it. However, most Hindus do consider the cow to be a sacred symbol of life that should be revered. In the oldest of Hindu scriptures, (the Vedas), a cow is associated with Aditi, the mother of all the gods. With that said, there is a special holiday for cows called Gopastami when all cows - even the ones that wander the streets – are washed and dressed with flowers!

Along with cows, Hindus associate several other animals with different gods and consider them sacred. Can you think of them? I’ll list a couple down below.

In some places of the world, cow or buffalo dung is traditionally used as a flooring material. It is believed that the dung not only has anti-bacterial and disease prevention properties, but is also a natural insecticide. It’s said that small insects such as scorpions and centipedes avoid areas where cow dung paste has been applied – keeps mosquitoes at bay too! In this photo series it's being used outdoors, which was new to me, I've only ever seen it used inside. Pretty wild!

As I understand it, flowers hold a special place in Hinduism. They are so important, in fact, that without them, no auspicious work can be done. From weddings to funerals, daily worship and more, flowers have an important role in Hindu practice. The Sanskrit word for prayer - puja - is derived from two words; Pushpa meaning flower, and Japa meaning to recite the name of god. While traveling in a majority Hindu nation I most often saw marigolds. The color reminded me of monk robes in parts of Southeast Asia.

In my faith tradition – Christianity – flowers are also a part of important occasions like weddings and funerals, but seem much less a part of everyday worship.

Psalm 103:15-16 shares; "As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more."

See a snake with a lion-like head or other serpent-like creature along the staircase at a Thai temple? It's likely a depiction of a naga - a guardian figure said to keep away bad spirits in Buddhist mythology.

Pray with me that Thai people would look to the Living God as their guardian.

"Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
